## Overview

With combo items, bundle existing a la carte items to sell them together for one price — for example, a taco combo with two tacos and a side for $12. Optional item prices and combo option selections support upsell and add-on use cases, helping drive profitability.

## Create a Combo Item

> ℹ️ **Menu items must already exist in order to be added to a combo.**
> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ New menu items and modifier groups cannot be created from the combo item form.

### **Step 1: Open Menu**

1. From Dashboard, open the left-hand menu and select **Menu & Tables **> **Items**
2. Click **Add menu item > Add combo item**

### **Step 2: Enter Item Details**

1. Enter the combo **Name**
2. Enter the combo **Price**
3. Select the **Category** the combo belongs to
  - Combo items must be added to categories in order to be displayed on online ordering channels and kiosks
4. Optionally select a **Color **for the menu item tile on POS devices
  - By default, menu item tiles on POS devices inherit the color set for their menu category
  - Optionally select a color here to override the category setting
5. Enter a **Description**
6. Upload an **Image** – Accepted file types: .jpg, .png

### **Step 3: Add Combo Options**

> ℹ️ **Combo options are groups of items guests can choose from as part of a combo. **
> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ - Like with modifier groups, a combo option group’s settings apply to all the combo items where it is used. These settings include the combo option name, the items it contains, and any prices configured for those items.
> ℹ️ - Min/max and optional selection requirements do not carry over to other combo items.
> ℹ️ - Items added to a combo option group inherit their configured modifier and routing groups. These settings cannot be modified from the combo item form.

1. Under **Combo options**, click the dropdown to search or select an existing combo option group
2. Alternatively, click **Add combo option** to create a new one
  - Enter the **Combo option name**
  - Click **Add items **to select items, then click **Add items **to confirm
  - Selected items will appear in the modal. Under **Edit items**, optionally:
    - Reorder items by clicking the top right corner of any item and dragging it
    - Add item prices by clicking the price field on any item and entering a price

> ℹ️ **Use item prices for premium upgrades**
> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ Items added to a combo option are priced at $0.00 by default. Item prices configured here will be added to the combo item price. For example, a burger combo may include fries for $0.00 or premium sides like fried onions for an extra $1.00.

  - Click **Save**

3. After adding a combo option, enter its selection requirements
  - Use the **Min **and **Max **dropdown fields to indicate the minimum and maximum number of items that need to be selected from the group
  - Use the **Optional **checkbox for non-required selections

### **Step 4: Set Up Taxes**

1. Under the **Taxes **section, review default taxes assigned to the combo item
2. Optionally override the default taxes applied to the combo by selecting **Item Specific Taxes **and selecting from the displayed options
3. Alternatively, select **Tax Exempt **to ensure no taxes are applied to the combo

## Edit and Duplicate Combo Items

### **Edit Combo Items from the Item Form**

1. In SpotOn Dashboard, open the left-hand menu and select **Menu & Tables **> **Items**
2. At the top of the Items page, toggle your view from List to **Grid**
3. Find and select the combo you want to edit
4. Update item settings as needed

> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ To edit a combo option group, click the **three-dot menu (⋮)** at the top right of the combo option card. Note that any changes made to a combo option group apply to all combo items where it is used.

5. Click **Save** to apply your changes

### **Bulk Edit Combo Items**

Combo item fields including **Name**, **Price**, **Category**, and **Description** can be edited in bulk from the **List **view or using AI Menu Assistant. 

- To use the list view, find the toggle at the top of the **Items** page and choose **List**
- To use AI Menu Assistant, input a prompt in the dialog at the top of the page

## What Staff Will See

### POS

- Combo items are displayed as menu item tiles on POS devices
- After selecting a combo item, staff will see the combo option groups and selection requirements on the next screen
- On selecting an item from a combo option group, staff will see that item’s attached modifiers
- When a combo option group contains items with prices configured, those prices are clearly displayed on menu item tiles and in the cart

### KDS 

- The Expo Station displays all combo items grouped together
- Individual kitchen stations only see the items routed to their station
- Each item will display a header indicating it is part of a combo

## Things to Know

Combo items are not supported for SpotOn Kiosk. 

They are supported across all other sales channels including POS stations, handhelds, SpotOn Order, third-party marketplace integrations, and Reddie kiosk.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Do combo items use the prices of the items they contain?**  
No. Items do not inherit their prices when added to a combo. Combo items carry their own prices. Prices configured for items within a combo option groups are added to the combo item price at the time of purchase.

**Are modifiers supported for combo items?**  
Yes. Items added to a combo item inherit their configured modifier groups. These modifier groups cannot be updated from the item form. 

**Are routing groups supported for combo items?**  
Yes. Items added to a combo item inherit their configured routing groups. These routing groups cannot be updated from the item form. 

**Can I 86 items that are part of a combo?**  
Yes. When an item is 86ed, it is made unavailable everywhere it appears – including any combo options to which it is attached.
